I am always being told off by i-technologists for quoting Picasso as having
said that computers are useless. But I still love his reasoning? "Because
they can only give you answers."
Picasso, like AJAXWorld Magazine, liked questions. So we thought we would
share with you what some of the world's leading rich Internet application
pioneers are thinking may be the next questions that we need to see answered.
From that readers can themselves infer where AJAX is headed.
What are the top questions to ask next about AJAX?
Eric Miraglia of Yahoo!
1. (From March'08) How do I calculate the ROI of building my RIA on the
iPhone SDK vs using AJAX?
2. How do I assess the performance of my app and decide what to do next to
make it faster?

my rich web apps? Beyond what's required, what makes good business se... (more)
The Free Software Foundation (FSF) doesn’t like Microsoft, doesn’t like
software patents, it especially doesn’t like Microsoft’s patents, and it
doesn’t trust the two of them in the same room together.
It’s convinced that Microsoft is eventually going to sue any open source
developer who uses Mono, the Novell-supported open source version of
Microsoft’s .NET widgetry, or who writes open source programs in C#, the
Microsoft development language.
It’s warning off developers now because Microsoft has added both C# and
Mono – or rather the ECMA 334 and 335 standards that embrace them – to
its two-year-old irrevocable, legally binding Community Promise not to sue.
The Free Software Foundation is sure Microsoft means to gull open source

The toxic virus of soft consumer spending has hit Best Buy forcing it to axe
its earnings guidance for the year and take it from $3.25-$3.40 a share to
somewhere between $2.30 and $2.90. The retailer’s eroding outlook will of
course boomerang back on its suppliers as it tries to adjust inventory, this
after rival Circuit City just filed for bankruptcy protection owing hundreds
of millions to folks like HP, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba.
Best Buy president Brian Dunn issued a statement saying, "In 42 years of
retailing, we've never seen such difficult times for the consumer. People are
making dramatic changes in how much they spend, and we're not immune from
CEO Brad Anderson called the consumer pullback "seismic" and said Best Buy

Last Friday Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth dubbed the next turn of
Ubuntu “Karmic Koala,” the future Ubuntu 9.10 due in October, and
immediately pointed its server side to the cloud.
“Ubuntu,” he said on a blog, “aims to keep free software at the
forefront of cloud computing by embracing the APIs of Amazon EC2, and making
it easy for anybody to setup their own cloud using entirely open tools.
We’re currently in beta with official Ubuntu base AMIs [Amazon Machine
Images] for use on Amazon EC2. During the Karmic cycle we want to make it
easy to deploy applications into the cloud, with ready-to-run appliances or
by quickly assembling a custom image. Ubuntu-vmbuilder makes it easy to
create a custom AMI today, but a portfolio of standard image profiles will
allow easier collaboration between people doing similar things on EC2.”
Besides prioritizing Amazon, Shuttlewo... (more)

WebRTC services have already permeated corporate communications in the form of videoconferencing solutions. However, WebRTC has the potential of going beyond and catalyzing a new class of services providing more than calls with capabilities such as mass-scale real-time media broadcasting, enriched and augmented video, person-to-machine and machine-to-machine communications. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Luis Lopez, CEO of Kurento, introduced the technologies required for implementing these idea...

DevOps is being widely accepted (if not fully adopted) as essential in enterprise IT. But as Enterprise DevOps gains maturity, expands scope, and increases velocity, the need for data-driven decisions across teams becomes more acute. DevOps teams in any modern business must wrangle the ‘digital exhaust’ from the delivery toolchain, "pervasive" and "cognitive" computing, APIs and services, mobile devices and applications, the Internet of Things, and now even blockchain.

The exciting thing about the IoT industry is now these decisions can be better, faster, and smarter. Now ...

WebRTC is about the data channel as much as about video and audio conferencing. However, basically all commercial WebRTC applications have been built with a focus on audio and video. WebRTC has had a real tough three or four years, and so have those working with it. Only a few short years ago, the development world were excited about WebRTC and proclaiming how awesome it was.
You might have played with the technology a couple of years ago, only to find the extra infrastructure requirements were painful to implement and poorly documented. This probably left a bitter taste in your mouth, especially when things went wrong.

A critical component of any IoT project is what to do with all the data being generated. This data needs to be captured, processed, structured, and stored in a way to facilitate different kinds of queries. Traditional data warehouse and analytical systems are mature technologies that can be used to handle certain kinds of queries, but they are not always well suited to many problems, particularly when there is a need for real-time insights.

Big Data engines are powering a lot of service businesses right now. Data is collected from users from wearable technologies, web behaviors, purchase behavior as well as several arbitrary data points we’d never think of. The demand for faster and bigger engines to crunch and serve up the data to services is growing exponentially. You see a LOT of correlation between “Cloud” and “Big Data” but on Big Data and “Hybrid,” where hybrid hosting is the sanest approach to the Big Data Infrastructure pro...
