Google Apps Keep Adding Cool Features

The following new features have been released in Google Docs

While the entire tech world seemed focused on Apple during the iPad rollout, Google just kept serving in silence, keeping the innovation engines running without distraction.

I sure enjoyed the iPad rollout.  Although I was a little underwhelmed, I enjoyed watching the presentation and reading about it and enjoyed some good editorials by friends on Facebook. I also enjoyed that Ryan Kamauff used the CTOvision.com blog on 9 Jan 2010 to post comments and context on the Apple Tablet that turns out, I think, to have been pretty much on the mark.

But now in hindsight I think the news that will really impact my day to day work was something posted by Google in a very quiet way.  They announced several new features in Google Docs by a small post on the Google Apps blog titled: “Thumbnail view, Spelling correction and new Maximum File Size on Google Docs.”

Here is the meat of the post:

The following new features have been released in Google Docs:
- Thumbnail view in the Docs List which allows you to preview your Docs.
- Spelling correction when searching for a doc.
- Upload any file limit increased from 250MB to 1GB.

How to access what’s new:
- Thumbnail view: This option is shown in the Docs List as a new button beside the view options in the top right.
- If you make a mistake when typing the search query for a document, you’ll now get a suggestion for the correct word.
- When you upload any type of file that isn’t being converted to a Google Document, the individual file limit is now 1GB.

I use Google Docs on my personal domain for family use and my business domain for business use.  I’m pretty happy with the functionality for both use cases and have written about how I run my small business with Google Apps before.  I have not complained about not being able to see my list of documents in a thumbnail view.  I and others I work with can organize by subject, filetype, folder/lable etc and can easily search and find anything done.  But being able to switch to a thumbnail view just speeds this up even more.  It is a great feature.

I imagine the spelling correction feature will come in handy too, but its benefits will probably not be apparant till I use it more frequenlty.  For me I have to say the same about uploads of other files and the increased file size limit to 1GB.  I have not made much use of this feature, but may choose to do so in the future.

Bottom line for me: I have already used the Thumbnail view to get things done faster.  It is a feature that is changing, a little bit, the way I work.  So for all the tech news yesterday, this is the big story for me.

IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...

To Really Work for Enterprises, MultiCloud Adoption Requires Far Better and Inclusive Cloud Monitoring and Cost Management … But How? Overwhelmingly, even as enterprises have adopted cloud computing and are expanding to multi-cloud computing, IT leaders remain concerned about how to monitor, manage and control costs across hybrid and multi-cloud deployments. It’s clear that traditional IT monitoring and management approaches, designed after all for on-premises data centers, are falling short in ...
